Meals in the Meadows
Meals and More kindly funded a one off project for a family fun day. This support was for vulnera ble families a nd their children from local partner project Homestart Edinburgh who struggle to access nourishing food during school holidays.
What we did
Edinburgh Community Food got in contact with our partners Homestart Edinburgh and the Edinburgh Lothian Greenspace Trust to run a joint activity over the Easter holidays in the Meadows, central Edinburgh.
A range of activities were provided for young children, including hula hooping, softball play and a bug hunt! ELGT ran a seed planting activity, getting the kids involved and discussing how plants grow. ECF provided healthy packed lunches and fruit to everyone who came along. As weather for outdoor activities is somewhat unreliable we ran some activities indoors, using the Pavilion Café on the Meadows.
The children all participated and were delighted to be able to create their own paper made-seed pots, fill with soil and plant flower seeds. They then took their pots home to be able to watch the plants grow.
Despite the rain, families stayed and enjoyed the activity and food.
Impact
17 adults and children attended from Home Start. Edinburgh Community Food were able to provide nourishing food to help support vulnerable families over the school holidays
Next Steps
We will look for future opportunities to work with both Homestart Edinburgh and ELGT on further projects.
