Meals & More Literacy Award 2022 Winner

Patrician Youth Centre, Downpatrick, County Down, Northern Ireland

Patrician Youth Centre and after school club attender is this year’s recipient of the ‘Ken McMeikan / Meals & More Literacy Award’.

Ken, the founding trustee of Meals and More is passionate about the importance of literacy for children wishing to encourage through the organisations worked with. Patrician Youth centre based in Downpatrick is supported by Meals & More and delivers holiday provision as part of the Children in Northern Ireland programme addressing hunger by providing food and encouraging children and young people to get active and be healthy.

The award for 2022 was launched in June and the theme this year was ‘Sports and Activities’.

Children were asked to make a submission talking about the sports and activities they enjoy.

The opportunity was given to after school members attending our Homework Support Club to take part. Clara O’Hare, then a P6 pupil at Our Lady and St Patrick PS wrote about the sporting activities she did with her family and in the community after school and at weekends. Clara highlighted those she enjoyed, how her interest in individual sports had developed, her ‘favourites’ for now and her interest in trying out others in the future. Clara’s entry scooped the award! Her presentation articulated her love of engaging in sports for fun and physical activity, family and community involvement and desire to try different sports.

The award was presented on Tuesday 17th January, by Mr Ken McMeikan, supporter of the Meals & more literacy award.
