Family Fun Day with ECF

Background

Edinburgh Community Food supports 400-500 low income and vulnerable families across all school holidays as part of the City of Edinburgh Council-led Discover! holiday hunger programme. However, for complex reasons numerous families are unable or unwilling to access the programme and Meals and More has enabled Edinburgh Community Food to support them with food and content delivery. The recent Big Day Out has allowed us to build on this by offering two family Boot Camps, run in partnership with Jump Edinburgh.

What we did

The Family Fun Days were held at a public park and community centre in a low income area of South West Edinburgh. 60 people attended across the two days, including 42 children.

Fun and exercise was provided by Jump-Edinburgh, with assistance from Edinburgh Community Food. For the first session the families had shots with the hula hoops, had space hopper races and danced with colourful ribbons. A breaktime snack of juicy oranges and  a delicious picnic lunch was provided by Edinburgh Community Food. The day ended with a lap of the park and a ‘silent disco’.

We had a really good time!!”

The second event coincided with the hottest day of the year with temperatures hitting 30°C. This time the group played with a huge parachute which was colourful and fun and provided a little bit of shelter while outside. Due to the heat it was decided that the event should move indoors to the nearby community centre. Families had the best of both worlds with a little bit of fun outside, a nice walk to the centre, and then shade for the rest of the day. Inside, the hula hoops and space hoppers were out with races and mini assault courses arranged in the sports hall.

Once again the oranges were greatly received in the heat, and everyone still enjoyed a packed lunch together with picnic blankets laid out in the hall so that everyone could sit together and enjoy their meal.

Thank you for the lovely packed lunches the oranges were tasty

It’s good that the event didn’t have to be cancelled and could carry on indoors
