Glasgow Science Centre with MADE4U

On Friday 5th August 2022, the children in MADE4U in ML2 were excited going to Glasgow Science Centre to explore about the perception, gravity, the usage of energy, inner workings of the human body. This is a part of “The Big Day Out 2022” program which is sponsored by Meals & More to encourage children wellbeing.

Number of attendees

20 children attended Glasgow Science Centre on Friday 5th August 2022

A description of how the day went

The children were split into two groups, one for each bus, members of staff joined each team. Each group was given a coloured bib so that the staff knew who was with what group. When on the bus the rules for this summer trip were explained once on the bus and twice when we arrived at the Glasgow Science Centre. How everyone must stick to their team leader and not go wandering off. If they ever got lost, immediately go to a member of staff and say they were from MADE4U IN ML2. Upon arrival the groups were then split into three.

Floors 1-3

Once everything had been explained to the children we all went in as one group to sign ourselves in to the venue and once past reception the groups were assigned to each of the three floors of the building and that they would be there for 45 minutes for each floor. Over the next few hours the children got to explore ‘The Question of Perception’ section on the first floor where the children got to experience over 80 different kinds of illusions and puzzles. One in particular they really liked was the room that seemed to change the gravity of the floor and made everyone slide to one side of the room. Both the children and staff found this really fun and went back to it several times.

Next for the children on the second floor was the ‘Powering the Future’ exhibit which allowed the children to see how energy works and is used in the modern day. A lot of the different activities involved the children learning about different types of engineering and how we harness raw sources of energy. Highlights from the children on this floor included, playing with a compressed air rocket that popped when enough energy was created and raced each other with electric race cars on a track through turning a hand crank.

Lastly, the final floor at the top of the Science Centre was the ‘Bodyworks’ exhibit where the children got to see the inner workings of the human body as well as the health & wellbeing side of it. They explored a lot of the negative impact of things like smoking on the body and how far they can push the body by doing physical activity. One of the stations was to run as fast as possible to a wall and measure how fast you were while another showed how fast the children’s reaction time was by pressing buttons that appeared. The children all really seemed to enjoy themselves on each floor yet didn’t manage to see everything the science centre had to offer.

 Food & Departure

Once time was up all groups were brought back down to the ground floor were tables had been set up by the Staff for them to have their food. Once everyone was finished all the staff gathered the children together and left for the buses back in their original two groups as they had when arriving. We returned back to the community centre and waited for all the children to be taken home by their families. Overall the summer trip had been very successful and the team would highly recommend doing such a trip again in the future as both staff and children all enjoyed themselves.

Quotes from Children and Parents:

Many of the boys enjoyed this and the upside down room, saying that “We don’t want to go, we’ll just stay here forever!!”

On the way back many of the children spoke of how much fun they had. One mentioned that: ”I never saw everything, can we go back again next year? What about next week?”
