TfC Youth Voice is made up of the following engagement groups; STARS (special educational needs and disabilities), Young Commissioners, Cosmic 3phiphany (LGBTQ+), Sunderland Youth Council, Change Council (Cared for/Care Experienced) and RISE. The young people who attend these groups are committed to making change across the city, ensuring their voice is heard, and that they are involved in the design, delivery and evaluation of services used by our children, young people and families.
From consultation with the young people, it was decided for the Big Day Out 2023, to attend a fully inclusive and accessible adventure day. Moor House Adventure Centre was chosen as the venue, the young people had the opportunity to take part in frisbee golf, tree climbing, archery, fire making, bushcraft cooking, and climb the CUBE (an 11-meter-high climbing frame).
The staff at the venue ensured the event was fully inclusive and accessible for all and empowered the young people to take part in all the activities. In total we had 56 young people and 10 adults who attended the session. Many of the young people who took part in the activities overcame a range of barriers including physical, SEMH, medical and phobias which they overcame during the session whilst having fun and learning new skills. A healthy lunch was also provided.
